The much-delayed RTO flyover project, which began in March 2022, is now expected to be completed by June 2025, according to Umair Inamdar, junior engineer with the state’s Public Works Department (PWD). Although 88% of the work is done, a key section—the landing near the RTO office—remains incomplete. The primary hurdle is the pending approval from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to cut down three heritage trees near the Hanuman Temple.
Initially, the PWD sought permission to remove four trees for the project, but after a site inspection by NMC’s garden department officials, it was decided to retain one of them. The revised proposal now includes planting 213 saplings on the Nagpur University campus as compensation. Meanwhile, demolition work at the RTO nullah and the Amravati flyover landing is in progress. Construction is underway on one side, while work on the other side is expected to begin in early June.
Another delay hit the project with the demolition of the bridge over Futala Nullah, which was originally scheduled to begin months ago. The demolition is being done in phases—the first phase is nearly complete, with raft slope concreting finished on May 4. The second phase is set to begin in early June. According to Inamdar, the delays were primarily due to coordination issues among key stakeholders, including the NMC and Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL).
Inamdar assured that June 30, 2025, is the final deadline for the completion of the RTO flyover. However, given the history of delays and the amount of work still pending, there is growing public skepticism about whether this deadline will be met. Until now, no updated timeline had been officially shared, despite rising expectations from citizens.
