In a move aimed at promoting eco-friendly practices and boosting citizen involvement in waste management, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has rolled out a new initiative for the doorstep collection of recyclable dry waste. The scheme encourages residents to responsibly dispose of materials like paper, plastic, cardboard, books, glass bottles, and metals—while earning a nominal return in exchange.
Under this programme, citizens are advised not to mix recyclable items with regular household garbage. Instead, a separate pick-up can be scheduled through the NMC’s waste management system. Volunteers from various self-help groups (SHGs), working in coordination with NMC, will visit homes to collect and weigh the recyclable waste, offering monetary compensation based on the volume.
Drawing a parallel with modern conveniences such as doorstep delivery of groceries, medicines, and healthcare, the civic body aims to make waste disposal just as accessible. By bringing the service to residents’ doorsteps, the NMC hopes to reduce unsegregated waste and foster a culture of accountability at the household level.
Officials believe this model will strengthen community engagement and make waste segregation an easy, rewarding, and habitual process for citizens.
