Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday that Air India has been served nine show-cause notices in the past six months relating to five identified safety violations. Enforcement action has been completed in connection with one of these violations, he added.
Responding to a question on the June 12 Ahmedabad plane crash, the Minister stated that no adverse trends had been observed in the reliability reports of the ill-fated aircraft during the last six months.
The tragic incident involved Air India flight AI-171, a London-bound Boeing 787-7, which crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport, striking a medical hostel building and claiming 241 of the 242 lives onboard, in addition to fatalities on the ground.
An official investigation into the accident is being led by the Director General of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) under Rule 11 of the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents & Incidents) Rules, 2017. A preliminary report, released on July 12, is available on the AAIB website aaib.gov.in.
The initial findings reveal a critical failure involving the aircraft’s fuel systems. The report states that fuel switches for both engines were cut off within seconds of takeoff. According to cockpit voice recordings retrieved from the black boxes, one pilot questioned the other, “Why did you cut off?” to which the second pilot responded, “I didn’t.”
The investigation is ongoing to determine the probable causes and contributory factors behind one of the deadliest aviation tragedies in recent Indian history.
