In a tragic incident on the Nagpur-Jabalpur Highway, an ambulance transporting a dead body from Pune to Kolkata was hit by an unidentified vehicle, killing two people on the spot. The accident took place around 5:30 am on Tuesday, July 23, near Pipla Bogda under the Hudkeshwar Police Station limits.
Police said the ambulance had developed a mechanical issue and was parked on the roadside when the mishap occurred. Cleaner Shekhar Pawar (35) had gone to a nearby petrol pump to bring a mechanic, leaving behind driver Shivaji Bhambure (40) and a relative of the deceased, Pankaj Biswas (40), inside the vehicle.
The ambulance was transporting the body of Kanhaai Biswas, a Kolkata resident, accompanied by his minor son Abir Biswas (14) and other family members. Suddenly, an unknown speeding vehicle rammed into the stationary ambulance and fled the scene. The force of the collision caused the ambulance to veer off the road and fall nearly 25 feet into a roadside drain.
Both Bhambure and Pankaj Biswas sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Government Medical Hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead.
Based on a complaint filed by Shekhar Pawar, Hudkeshwar Police have registered a case under BNS Sections 106(1), 281 and relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. The identity of the absconding driver remains unknown, and further investigation is underway.
