With Nagpur’s iconic lakes swelling from relentless rains, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has launched an emergency safety drive to prevent disaster before it strikes.
Water levels at Ambazari, Futala, and Gorewada lakes have surged alarmingly, turning beloved leisure spots into potential danger zones. In a swift response, NMC’s Fire Department — under the command of Chief Fire Officer Tushar Barahate and Commissioner Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari — has erected barricades and warning boards at all three lakes.
“We’re not waiting for a tragedy,” said an official. “These areas are popular, but safety must come first.”
Futala Lake, a crowd magnet with its food stalls and evening buzz, is under close watch as footfall remains high despite warnings. Ambazari and Gorewada — both flanked by residential neighborhoods — are also seeing aggressive safety reinforcements.
Authorities have issued a no-nonsense public advisory: Stay away from the water’s edge. No stunts. No thrill-seeking. Parents and the elderly are urged to exercise extreme caution.
Heavy rain forecasts for the coming days have only heightened the urgency.
The message is clear — Nagpur’s lakes are beautiful, but right now, they’re dangerous. NMC is doing its part. It’s time citizens do theirs: respect the barricades, follow the warnings, and stay safe.
Natural beauty isn’t worth risking lives.
