The monsoon season has once again pushed vegetable prices upwards, as heavy rains continue to disrupt supply in wholesale markets. Green chillies are retailing between ?100 to ?120 per kg, while tomatoes have touched ?80 per kg in local markets.
According to traders, fluctuations in supply due to rainfall lead to frequent price hikes, and the instability persists as long as the rains continue. Normally, green chillies are priced at ?50 to ?60 per kg, and tomatoes at ?30 to ?40 per kg, but both have seen sharp rises in recent days.
Wholesalers suggest that the shortage is particularly affecting leafy and perishable vegetables, and prices may only stabilize after the monsoon ends.
Kattal Selling at ?200 per kg
A rare vegetable harvested during the monsoon, Kattal (jackfruit-like vegetable) has hit the market and is currently selling at ?200 per kg in retail. Its wholesale price ranges from ?120 to ?150 per kg. Known for its rich nutritional value, kattal is in high demand despite the steep price.
