A steel mesh barrier installed along the parapet wall of the Y-shaped Sadar-Katol-Mankapur flyover near Chhaoni Chowk gave way on Saturday evening, heightening fears over safety and maintenance along this notoriously accident-prone route.
Although no injuries were reported, the incident has reignited concerns about the overall structural integrity and traffic control measures at the site. The mesh panel, originally placed to prevent two-wheeler riders from falling off the flyover, became a hazard itself as it dangled precariously in the wind before ultimately crashing onto the road below.
Motorists passing underneath, especially near Achraj Towers at Chhaoni, were visibly alarmed. The stretch has a troubling history of mishaps, including a fatal accident in August 2020 in which a 36-year-old nurse, Manjusha Dalal, lost her life after a speeding SUV hit her scooter.
Traffic police revealed that the area continues to see high-speed driving and rampant lane violations. After the 2020 tragedy, recommendations were made to bolster safety through the installation of fiber-based lane dividers and reinforced barriers, but authorities have failed to consistently act on them.
Photos of the latest collapse show the fallen mesh and overgrown vegetation creeping through the flyover’s structure—visual evidence of the larger issue at hand: a glaring absence of routine maintenance and competent oversight of crucial public infrastructure.
