Nagpur witnessed chaos on Tuesday when workers of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) stormed into a Sadar branch of Yes Bank, protesting against the alleged unfair auction of a farmer’s JCB machine. The incident has sparked significant concern in banking circles.
According to reports, farmer Indrajeet Mude from Nagpur district had purchased a JCB machine through a loan financed by Yes Bank. After he defaulted on a few installments, the bank seized the vehicle. Mude later approached the bank to reclaim his JCB and was willing to clear the pending dues, but the bank allegedly went ahead and auctioned the machine without his consent. Feeling cheated, Mude sought help from local MNS leaders, who then led a protest at the bank.
The protest quickly escalated, with MNS workers allegedly blackening the bank’s signboard and assaulting a staff member. They also raised loud slogans against the bank, accusing it of exploiting poor farmers. The unexpected agitation left bank employees in shock and fear.
MNS leaders said the protest was aimed at exposing the bank’s “unjust treatment” of the farmer. “The farmer requested the bank not to auction the JCB and even agreed to settle his dues, but the bank ignored his plea. We will continue our agitation until the JCB is returned,” an MNS official said.
The incident comes amid heightened political tensions in Maharashtra, with MNS recently taking an aggressive stance on Marathi vs. non-Marathi issues and dance bar operations. The party has been conducting campaigns demanding the use of Marathi in banks and government institutions. In the past week, MNS workers vandalized a dance bar in Raigad district, and now the Nagpur Yes Bank branch has become the latest target of their protests.
Police have detained over 50 MNS workers following the incident, and a case will be registered against those involved in the assault on the bank executive. Authorities are investigating the matter while security around the branch has been tightened.
