In a late-night operation, Tehsil Police arrested two men from West Bengal for possessing a large stash of counterfeit Indian currency in Nagpur. The duo was nabbed near the Guard Line area, adjacent to Mayo Hospital, in the early hours of Wednesday, August 6.
According to officials, the Tehsil police team was patrolling the area between 12:40 am and 12:55 am when they received a tip-off about two suspects carrying fake currency near the Guard Line railway quarters. Acting swiftly, the police laid a trap and detained two individuals matching the description provided.
During questioning in the presence of panch witnesses, the suspects identified themselves as:
• Zaminrul Hussain Lokman Sheikh Hussain (27), resident of Kabrej Tola, Sadipur, District Malda, West Bengal
• Azimtanu Sheikh (29), resident of Dulalganj, Kali Chowk, District Malda, West Bengal
A search of their belongings led to the recovery of 243 fake ₹500 notes, totaling ₹1,21,500, neatly packed in a plastic polythene bag. Police also seized two mobile phones from the duo.
A case has been registered at Tehsil Police Station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including provisions related to the possession of counterfeit currency. Both accused have been taken into custody, and further investigation is underway to trace the source and possible network behind the fake notes.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of Commissioner of Police Ravindra Kumar Singhal, Joint CP Navinchandra Reddy, Additional CP (North) Rajendra Dabhade, DCP Rahul Madane, and ACP Anita More. The arrest team included PI Shubhangi Deshmukh, PI (Crime) Rahul Wadhwe, PSI Sheikh Rasool, and constables Rajesh Thakur, Firoz Khan, Vinod Kature, Pawan Sakharkar, and Sandeep Shirfule.
Police suspect the fake currency may have been circulated in the local market and are probing further to identify links to larger interstate counterfeit rackets.
