In a major step towards clean and cost-effective industrial energy, the industries located in Butibori MIDC will start receiving piped natural gas starting next month, marking a significant leap in Nagpur’s gas infrastructure network.
The development comes as the Mumbai-Nagpur-Jharsuguda pipeline of GAIL (Gas Authority of India Limited) nears completion. Charging of the pipeline is expected to begin by the end of August. The 1,700-kilometre-long pipeline, with a 24-inch diameter, will enable bidirectional flow of gas — from Mumbai via Dabhol and Dahej terminals, or from the east coast ports of West Bengal and Odisha via Jharsuguda.
To facilitate local distribution, HCG Nagpur Pvt Ltd has constructed a pipeline node at Khapri Gandhi village, extending into Butibori. Once charged, industries in Butibori MIDC — many of which operate boilers and furnaces — will begin receiving the supply, reducing their fuel costs and environmental footprint.
According to industrialist Nitin Lonkar, the pipeline will be a game-changer for manufacturing units. “It will lower production costs and significantly cut down air pollution,” he said.
What’s more, in the next 2 to 3 months, the same pipeline network will also begin supplying natural gas to residential and commercial areas in Butibori town, MIHAN, and parts of south Nagpur, officials said.
The project, with an estimated cost of ₹8,000 crore, is poised to transform Nagpur into a natural gas hub for both industry and urban development.
