In a shocking case of environmental fraud, a massive afforestation project in Akola district has turned into what locals are calling a ‘green scam’ on paper only. Funded by over ₹4 crore under the District Planning Committee (DPC) scheme, the Social Forestry Department (SFD) claimed to have planted 93,000 saplings over 93 hectares in eight villages during 2023 — yet, barely a handful of trees can be found on the ground today.
Villages like Rohana, Nairat, Ganori, Mhaisang, Valad Bujruk, Palod, and Palso Bujruk were marked for the plantation drive. However, a recent ground inspection revealed a grim reality — less than 2% survival rate of saplings, with large tracts of land showing no signs of any plantation.
Whistleblower Vivek Ghuge has submitted a formal complaint to top forest authorities, demanding a high-level probe, suspension of officials involved, and recovery of funds. He alleged a nexus between forest officers and fake NGOs, misusing funds under the guise of sapling planting, CCT works, and protective fencing.
While DFO (SFD) MC Khore admitted the plantation failed, he blamed poor site selection, encroachment, and cattle grazing. He denied the ₹4 crore figure, stating only ₹1.25 crore was spent — a claim contradicted by insider sources.
Activists like Munna Sheikh argue this is not an isolated case, citing similar failures under the ₹35 crore Greening Maharashtra mission. As public outrage grows, demands for accountability and legal action are getting louder — and unavoidable.
