After the construction of cement roads, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has now begun laying underground stormwater drainage pipelines in Takli Wadi, raising eyebrows among residents. Citizens allege that while the cement road work was carried out without proper planning, now stormwater drains are being dug up in a manner that will again inconvenience the public and damage existing infrastructure.
As part of its city development projects, NMC has taken up the installation of stormwater drains to prevent waterlogging. The work involves laying concrete pipes and constructing chambers at intervals. However, locals point out that this work should have been done before cementing the roads — doing it later not only damages the newly built roads but also leads to wastage of public funds.
26 Stormwater Chambers Installed
In the 26 selected streets, stormwater chambers have been placed and connected to underground pipelines. In some areas, large-sized drains have been built, while in others smaller chambers have been used depending on road width. Each chamber is estimated to have a capacity of 100 to 150 cubic meters of water.
Health Concerns Raised
Citizens have also voiced concerns about the quality and safety of the work. In some locations, chambers have been left open without proper covers, posing a risk to pedestrians and motorists, especially during the monsoon. They have demanded that the corporation ensure quality and timely completion, along with proper safety measures.
Residents claim that these projects are being carried out hastily, without proper coordination between departments, leading to unnecessary expenditure and public inconvenience. They have urged the civic body to adopt a comprehensive approach to road and drainage planning to avoid repeating such mistakes.
