Several High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) installation centres in Nagpur have been found charging extra amounts from vehicle owners, in violation of government-fixed rates. Reports reveal that some centres are collecting an additional ₹50 for plate installation. Furthermore, citing weak or fragile plates that may break within days, a few centres are persuading customers to pay an extra ₹300–₹400 for a so-called “protective cover.”
Officials say that these extra charges are being levied without any written complaints from the public, allowing some centres to take undue advantage. However, after receiving two written complaints in Nagpur, the work at the concerned centres was suspended.
As per state government-approved rates, the total cost for HSRP installation (including all taxes and charges) is fixed at ₹232 for two-wheelers (motorcycles, scooters, trailers), ₹510 for three-wheelers (auto-rickshaws), and ₹757 for four-wheelers and heavy vehicles (cars, buses, trucks, tempos). Charging any amount beyond these rates is strictly prohibited.
A case in point was reported by Nitin Giri from the Daba area, who complained that a centre had charged an extra ₹50 for HSRP installation. Following this, the company suspended operations at that location.
“No centre is allowed to collect extra charges under any pretext. After receiving a complaint about overcharging, we have stopped work at the concerned centre,” said Amir Hussain, Roadmate Safety Systems Ltd., Nagpur.
