The Maharashtra Government has approved the extension of Nagpur Metro Phase II from the Kanhan River to Kanhan town, bringing the long-awaited metro connectivity to the northern edge of the Nagpur Metropolitan Region a step closer.
The approval, granted on Monday, clears the way for the construction of a 1.40-km fully elevated corridor with one new metro station at Kanhan town. The project is estimated to cost Rs 310.35 crore.
The extension has been proposed based on recommendations in the updated Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for Nagpur and the Nagpur Metropolitan Region, which highlighted the need to extend the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) beyond the originally planned Kanhan River terminal to meet the region’s future transportation needs.
The proposal was approved by the Cabinet Infrastructure Committee on June 25, following which the Urban Development Department (UDD) issued the Government Resolution on Monday.
The project will be implemented by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro). Funding will be arranged through equity contributions from the Central and Maharashtra governments, interest-free subordinate debt and concessional loans from bilateral or multilateral financial institutions.
Of the total project cost, Rs 155.18 crore will be raised through external borrowings. The State Government has also approved Rs 39.88 crore as equity support, in addition to bearing expenses related to land acquisition, rehabilitation, taxes and interest incurred during construction.
The approved extension will include a single elevated station at Kanhan Town, while operations and maintenance will be supported by the existing MIHAN and Hingna metro depots. The project is targeted for completion by December 2027.
The Government Resolution also authorises land acquisition wherever required, implementation of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), creation of a Dedicated Urban Transport Fund, and execution of loan agreements required for financing the project.
A senior Maha-Metro official said the project will now move into the tendering stage, after which implementation is expected to gather pace.
