A heartbreaking scene unfolded on Sunday when 36-year-old labourer Amit Bhura Yadav rode nearly 70 kilometres through heavy rain with his wife’s body tied to the back of his motorcycle, after a fatal accident on the Nagpur–Jabalpur Highway. The video of the incident went viral, stirring outrage over the public’s apathy — and raising questions about police response.
Amit and his wife, Gyarasi (35), originally from Karanpur in Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh, had been living in Lonara near Koradi for over a decade, working as labourers to support their 15-year-old daughter. On Raksha Bandhan afternoon, they set off on their motorcycle (MH 40 DB 1983) to their native place.
Around 3.30 pm, while passing through Morfata in Deolapar Police Station limits, a speeding Eicher truck hit their bike from behind. Amit was thrown to the side, while Gyarasi came under the truck’s wheels and died on the spot.
As rain lashed the highway, Amit desperately waved down vehicles, pleading for help. “No one stopped,” he recounted. “In that moment, I wasn’t thinking about Seoni, which was just 55 km ahead. I just thought of taking her back to Lonara. I tied her to the back seat and started riding.”
Midway, Highway Traffic Police personnel intercepted him and inquired about his destination. Still in shock, Amit kept riding until Koradi police, in coordination with Highway cops, contacted Deolapar Police and pieced together the tragedy.
Deolapar Police’s API Narayan Turkunde-Patil explained why they could not trace the victim earlier. “We received a call around 3.30 pm about an accident near Morfata. When we reached, there were signs of a mishap, but no body. We checked with the government hospital, but they had no record either. The victim was already being taken away by her husband,” he said.
Gyarasi’s body was later sent to Mayo Hospital for post-mortem before being handed over to the family. Her last rites were performed in Lonara on Monday. Police have registered a case against the Eicher truck driver, and further investigation is underway.
For Amit, the 70 km ride home was not just a journey — it was a rain-soaked path of grief, loneliness, and unanswered cries for help.
