Nagpur: To ease traffic congestion and improve road safety, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani has issued a fresh directive banning roadside parking, pickup, and drop of passengers by private travel buses within Nagpur’s Inner Ring Road limits between 8 am and 10 pm.
The move follows repeated complaints from public representatives and citizens about traffic chaos caused by the illegal halting of large buses at multiple points across the city. Most operators lack official parking or boarding facilities, and their roadside stops often block traffic and increase accident risks.
Traffic Volume Data:
According to the traffic department, the city sees heavy daily movement of private travel buses on key routes:
• Wardha Road: ~642 buses to/from Wardha, Yavatmal, Chandrapur
• Amravati Road: ~190 buses to/from Amravati, Pune, Nashik
• Chhindwara Road: ~78 buses to/from Chhindwara
• Jabalpur Road: ~296 buses to/from Bhopal, Indore, Madhya Pradesh
• Bhandara Road: ~92 buses to/from Bhandara, Gondia, Chhattisgarh
• Umred Road: ~308 buses to/from Brahmapuri, Wadsa, Gadchiroli
Only a handful of operators, such as Saini, Mahatma, Baba, Sawan, Maa Durga, and Khurana Travels, have their own premises for boarding and alighting. Others rely on pay-and-park arrangements or occupy public spaces illegally, causing inconvenience to local residents and daily commuters.
Key Provisions of the Order:
• Roadside parking, pickup, and drop by private travel buses are prohibited within the Inner Ring Road from 8 am to 10 pm.
• No stopping in “No Parking” zones outside the Ring Road.
• Operators with their own parking premises may only use those facilities for passenger boarding and drop-off.
• Operators without private parking facilities cannot conduct roadside operations in the restricted area.
Exemptions:
1. MSRTC buses operating from official bus stands.
2. Company buses for MIHAN and MIDC employees (with prior permission).
3. Buses for weddings or private events (with prior permission).
4. Ambulances, emergency vehicles, and school buses.
5. Senior citizen, women-special, and pilgrimage buses.
Bus operators have been given seven days to update pickup/drop information, notify passengers about the changes, and make necessary arrangements at designated points outside city limits.
Violations will invite action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The order will be in force from August 13 to September 12, 2025.
Traffic police have appealed to all operators and citizens to comply with the directive to prevent inconvenience and ensure smooth traffic movement in Nagpur.
