The deteriorating condition of Nagpur’s popular Futala Lake has come under the scrutiny of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The Pune bench of the NGT has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and issued notices to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), directing it to submit a detailed reply by September 3.
The case was heard by judicial member Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh and expert member Dr. Vijay Kulkarni. Once a favourite leisure spot for city residents, Futala Lake has lost its charm due to neglect, lack of maintenance, and absence of proper facilities.
Waste Dumping and Water Pollution
A report by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) dated July 18, 2023, revealed that during inspection, large amounts of plastic and other waste were found dumped in and around the lake, and the water was observed to be polluted. Following this, MPCB sent a letter to NMC, seeking a response. However, NMC reportedly did not reply, prompting MPCB to submit the matter before the NGT.
Lack of Basic Amenities
The tribunal observed that the lake premises lack basic facilities, including proper seating arrangements for visitors. NMC’s counsel, Adv. Girish Kunte, sought more time to submit a detailed response to the tribunal, which has been granted. The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for September 4.
