Nagpur: In a major breakthrough, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of South East Central Railway, Nagpur Division, arrested a gold artisan from West Bengal who was fleeing with stolen ornaments worth nearly ₹27 lakh.
The incident came to light on August 17, 2025, when Naihati Police Station in West Bengal informed the Bilaspur RPF control room that a gold worker had decamped with 276 grams of gold from a jewellery shop in Naihati. A case under FIR No. 227/25 u/s 316(5)/3(5) BNS had already been registered against him.
Acting swiftly on the alert, Divisional Security Commissioner Deep Chandra Arya deployed the RPF task force and Crime Intelligence Branch (CIB) team from Gondia to track the accused. Based on his location, the accused was traced to the Howrah–Ahmedabad Express (Train No. 12834).
During a thorough search of the train at Gondia railway station, officials found the suspect traveling with his wife and father in coach B7. On questioning, he revealed his identity as Atul Satish Jadhav (24), resident of Balwan village, Atpadi, Sangli district, Maharashtra, and confessed to carrying the stolen ornaments. The team recovered 276 grams of yellow metal resembling gold, valued at around ₹27 lakh.
The RPF immediately coordinated with Naihati Police Inspector Arun Prasad Ghosh, who confirmed that Jadhav was the wanted accused in the West Bengal case. Following protocol, Jadhav was deboarded at Tiroda station and taken to the RPF post at Gondia, where he was kept in custody. Naihati police officials have been informed and are on their way to take charge of the accused.
The prompt action of RPF Nagpur Division drew appreciation from West Bengal Police, who lauded their vigilance and efficiency in preventing the accused from evading arrest.
