Nagpur’s Super Speciality Hospital, affiliated with Government Medical College (GMC), has officially been upgraded into a Postgraduate Medical Institute after nearly three decades of persistent efforts. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has sanctioned four seats in the M.Ch. Neurosurgery department, while the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has cleared advanced courses such as DM Endocrinology, DM Pulmonology, DM Organ Transplant Anaesthesia & Critical Care, and M.Ch. Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery (CVTS). With these additions, Nagpur is steadily emerging as a significant centre for medical education.
The vision for this institute was first announced by then Chief Minister Barr. A.R. Antulay during the Winter Session on December 1, 1981. Two years later, CM Vasantdada Patil laid the foundation stone. The hospital began functioning in 1998, offering specialized departments like CVTS, Cardiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Urology, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology (Diabetes), and Pulmonology.
However, it took 15 years before postgraduate super-specialty courses were introduced. The first DM programmes launched with two seats each in Gastroenterology and Cardiology. Last year, M.Ch. Urology commenced with two seats, and this year, admissions have been completed for four seats in M.Ch. Neurosurgery.
“This development marks a historic milestone for the healthcare and medical education sector in Nagpur and Vidarbha,” stated GMC Dean Dr. Raj Gajbhiye.
