The Bombay High Court has directed the release of all private buses detained by Nagpur Traffic Police and pulled up the State Government over the absence of bus terminals, bus stops, and designated parking spaces in the city. The court observed that the lack of such infrastructure has worsened traffic congestion in Nagpur.
The matter was brought before the court by a group of bus operators who challenged the decision of the city traffic authorities imposing a blanket ban on private buses entering Nagpur during daytime hours.
The petitioners argued that the order was arbitrary and caused hardship to both operators and passengers. They pointed out that higher authorities in the state transport and traffic departments had already clarified that no restrictions should be imposed on permit-holder buses within city limits.
The Traffic Police defended their decision, claiming authority to regulate bus movement for easing congestion. However, during the hearing, they conceded that no action would be taken against long-distance permit-holder buses in view of state-level directives.
After considering the submissions, the High Court ordered that all buses detained under the ban be released and directed the State Government to explain why permanent bus terminals and parking facilities had not been created in Nagpur. The court has sought a reply from the authorities and will hear the matter further in the coming days.
