The days of passengers waving down buses anywhere on the road may soon be history.
In a landmark move, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) transport department will install 500 Smart Bus Stop Poles across the city to bring order to public transport.
Even with 1,500 existing shelters, commuters often stop buses in the middle of traffic, causing sudden halts and chaos. The new poles will act as clear, official bus-stop points, ensuring drivers halt only at designated locations. Each smart bus stop pole will feature:
A prominent bus stop signboard.
An LED digital display showing upcoming bus arrivals and departures.
Ground markings to guide safe passenger queues.
Officials said the poles are a fast-to-deploy, low-cost upgrade that complements shelters rather than replacing them. In high-demand areas, both shelter + smart pole will be installed, giving passengers shade, seating, and real-time bus information.
The first batch will be placed along high-frequency NMC corridors, gradually expanding citywide. Drivers will stop only at these poles as per revised schedules, cutting down unsafe mid-block halts and unpredictable lane changes.
By giving passengers clearer signage, predictable boarding points, and countdown timers, the NMC hopes to deliver safer, faster, and smarter bus services.
With the rollout of the smart bus stop pole network, Nagpur’s public transport system is set to take a giant leap into modern urban mobility.
