Nagpur: The city police, in a first-of-its-kind move in Maharashtra, has introduced two advanced technology-driven tools under Operation Shakti to strengthen its fight against human trafficking, trace missing persons, and take swift action against offenders.
The recently launched Garuda Drishti, unveiled recently by Hon’ble Chief Minister, has now been integrated with a new feature to detect digital and online trafficking. This AI-powered software will scan social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and others to identify signs of trafficking, including fake job scams, escort services, and fraudulent advertisements. According to senior officials, this enhancement will enable faster detection of such crimes and facilitate swift case registration under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act (ITPA).
Alongside this, Nagpur Police has rolled out a Facial Recognition (FR) Surveillance System. FR-enabled cameras installed at key hotspots across the city are designed to help identify missing women and children, as well as track repeat offenders. The system generates real-time alerts for the police, enabling immediate intervention.
“With Operation Shakti, we are integrating advanced technology into day-to-day smart policing. These tools will not only help us act faster against perpetrators but also enhance our ability to trace missing women and children,” said DCP Mahak Swami.
“Our fight against human trafficking is strengthened with AI-driven tools like Garuda Drishti and Facial Recognition surveillance. These innovations reflect our commitment to proactive, people-centric policing for a safer Nagpur,” said Dr. Ravinder Singal, Commissioner of Police, Nagpur City.
Officials added that these initiatives are part of a broader effort to embed AI and surveillance technology into crime prevention strategies, ensuring that Nagpur is not just a smart city but also a safe city.
