The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), in collaboration with the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), is formulating the city’s first Healthy Streets Policy to make Nagpur’s roads safer, greener, and more inclusive.
Under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari, several citizen-friendly initiatives are being implemented. As part of this effort, the Healthy Streets Policy will focus on developing better footpaths, dedicated cycling infrastructure, safer intersections, and streets that prioritize walking, cycling, and public transport.
With the rapid increase in private vehicles in recent years, there is a pressing need to improve road safety in Nagpur. The policy is expected to particularly benefit children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.
A recent ITDP study revealed that vehicles on Nagpur’s main roads often travel at speeds exceeding 50 km/hr. This new policy marks an important step towards building roads that are safer, inclusive, and efficient for all users. To make the policy truly citizen-centric, NMC has launched a survey to gather feedback and experiences from Nagpur residents.
Citizens are encouraged to share the difficulties they face while traveling in the city and suggest improvements in road planning. The survey can be accessed at bit.ly/41NDbVY and will remain open until September 25, 2025.
NMC has appealed to all residents to participate in large numbers, as the survey will take only a few minutes to complete but will play a crucial role in shaping Nagpur’s future road network.
