The Additional District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (ACDRC), Nagpur, has ordered a popular travel portal to refund ₹68,485 to a customer, along with penal interest and ₹50,000 as compensation, after a Paris hotel booking went wrong and left her stranded without accommodation.
The case was filed by Dr. Anjali Anil Chiwane, a resident of Nagpur, who had booked her stay at Hotel Résidence Hôtelière Salvy in Paris through the portal for October 19–26, 2018. Despite having a confirmed booking, the hotel refused her accommodation. Alone in a foreign country and with an important European medical examination approaching, Dr. Chiwane had to scramble to find another place to stay. She eventually secured a room at a different hotel but had to spend an additional ₹68,485.
Citing the travel portal’s failure to provide proper service, she approached the Consumer Commission for relief. The Commission, presided over by Satish Sapre along with members Milind Kedar and Sheetal Petkar, held the portal responsible for deficiency in service and unfair trade practices.
The Commission noted that Dr. Chiwane suffered both financial loss and mental stress, as her trip for an international exam was disrupted due to the portal’s lapses, forcing her to arrange accommodation on her own.
