Through an RTI query, activist Abhay Kolarkar received startling information from the Bank of Maharashtra.
According to the bank’s reply, as of June 20, 2025, there were a total of 33,17,831 inactive accounts. In these accounts, ₹11,12,12,40,477,165 (over ₹11,120 crore) have been deposited. No claimants have come forward to withdraw this amount. The details were shared under the Right to Information Act.
312 Fraud Cases
The RTI also revealed that in the last one year (from April 1, 2024, to June 20, 2025), the bank recorded 312 fraud cases involving ₹947 crore. In the same period, its Nagpur regional office alone reported 116 cyber fraud cases amounting to ₹10.17 crore. Out of this, ₹21.67 crore has been returned to account holders as compensation.
Further, between April 2024 and June 2025, Bank of Maharashtra disbursed 8,79,000 loans amounting to ₹45,407 crore. These included ₹11,885 crore through 4,29,000 agricultural loans. The bank has also expanded its branch and staffing network significantly, with 2,285 branches, 3,408 ATMs, and 24,306 employees as of March 31, 2025.
For comparison, in 1987, the bank had only 1,655 branches and 422 ATMs.
