The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is preparing to launch a door-to-door property tax survey that will cover nearly one lakh properties across the city. Conducted with the help of private agencies, the exercise will run for six months and aims to bring every taxable unit under the civic tax net. Property tax is a major source of revenue for NMC. Last year, the corporation collected around ₹230 crore, but officials believe the actual potential is much higher.
Large numbers of properties remain unassessed or under-assessed, while some residential spaces are being used commercially without revised tax entries. The new survey seeks to plug these loopholes and boost the civic body’s financial strength. Teams of private surveyors will visit properties door-to-door, recording details such as ownership, occupancy, usage type, and floor area. To ensure accuracy, they will use laser distance meters for measurement and GPS-enabled devices for geo-tagging. Every property will be issued a Unique Property Identification Number (UPIN) and data will be uploaded into NMC’s GeoCivic system, in use since 2016. This integration will also help detect unauthorized constructions and hidden commercial activity.
The survey will cover residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, government-owned buildings, and vacant plots. Even properties exempt from tax will be documented, ensuring a transparent and comprehensive database.
Officials said that citizen cooperation will be crucial. Updated records will mean fairer tax bills and better civic planning for water, sanitation, roads, and infrastructure.
