Nagpur: Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), which marked its centenary last year, has once again missed a place among India’s top 200 universities. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released by the Union Ministry of Education on Wednesday did not feature RTMNU in its latest list.
The university, which earlier figured between the 150–200 bracket in past rankings, failed to make the cut this time. Notably, no university from Vidarbha—including those in Nagpur, Amravati, and Gadchiroli—found mention in the national rankings, raising concerns over the academic standing of the region.
Experts point to prolonged leadership issues as a major factor behind RTMNU’s slide. Under former Vice Chancellor Dr. Subhash Chaudhari, the university hosted the Indian Science Congress during its centenary celebrations in 2023, a milestone in research outreach. However, allegations against Dr. Chaudhari, followed by his suspension and subsequent death during the inquiry, derailed academic and administrative functioning.
Even after a year, the absence of a full-time Vice Chancellor continues to hamper the university’s progress, further impacting its performance.
