The Maharashtra government on Thursday announced a revision in the public holiday for Eid-e-Milad in Mumbai city and suburban districts. The holiday, earlier scheduled for Friday, September 5, will now be observed on Monday, September 8, officials said.
The decision came after a meeting of Muslim organisations on August 21, where it was agreed that the Eid-e-Milad procession in Mumbai would take place on September 8. The adjustment was also made keeping in mind Anant Chaturdashi, a major Hindu festival falling on September 6, to ensure smooth conduct of both events and maintain communal harmony.
Bhiwandi MLA Rais Shaikh, who had urged the government to shift the holiday, welcomed the move and shared the official notification on social media, thanking the state for its decision.
The change, however, is limited to Mumbai city and suburban districts. Across the rest of Maharashtra, the public holiday for Eid-e-Milad will continue to be observed on September 5, as per the original notification.
