Nagpur is set to witness a landmark addition to its spiritual landscape — a replica of the world-renowned Mahabodhi Mahavihara of Bodh Gaya. The project, named “Buddhaland,” is being developed by the Sanghakaya Foundation at Lohgad near Mohpa.
The initiative is the vision of Bhante Prashil Ratna Gautam, president of the foundation, who dreamt of creating an international meditation center and a Buddhist university for children. After searching across the country, he chose Nagpur — regarded as the true land of Buddha owing to the legacy of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar — as the site for this global project.
Adding to the noble effort, retired scientist Dr. Bhaskar donated two acres of land free of cost to kickstart the venture. The upcoming complex will not only house the replica of Mahabodhi Mahavihara, but also an international meditation hub, a Buddhist university, and an old-age home for the elderly. Several other Dhamma-related projects are planned, and construction has already begun, attracting curious visitors.
The Sanghakaya Foundation, known for spreading the message of peace, love, and compassion worldwide, has also been at the forefront of social service, including relief projects during the Covid-19 crisis.
“Nagpur is truly the land of Buddha. From here, the message of peace and compassion can reach the world. That’s why we chose this soil for Buddhalaṇḍ,” said Bhante Prashil Ratna Gautam.
With this project, Nagpur is poised to become a new global center of Buddhist learning and meditation.
