Senior OBC leader and Leader of Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar has announced that the OBC community will wage a battle on two fronts—courtrooms and streets—against the state government’s move to extend Maratha reservation from the OBC quota.
Addressing a key meeting of OBC organizations from across Vidarbha at Ravi Bhavan, Wadettiwar said the state’s first Government Resolution (GR) used the word “eligible” for Marathas in the OBC category, but the second GR dropped the word, thereby granting them direct entry into OBC reservation. “This is nothing but injustice. Out of 27% OBC quota, 13% has already been curtailed. If Marathas are accommodated in the remaining 19%, OBC rights will be wiped out,” he warned.
The meeting saw participation from leaders of Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Yavatmal, Amravati, Akola, Buldhana, and Washim districts. Among those present were MLA Abhijit Wanjari, former MP Khushal Bopche, OBC scholar Nagesh Chaudhari, and several senior activists. All leaders expressed strong opposition to the government decision.
Wadettiwar said a 25-member core committee will be set up to lead the agitation and that a massive OBC Morcha will be organized in Nagpur in October. He also alleged that the RSS has always opposed reservations and questioned how its ideological allies in power could be trusted to safeguard OBC interests.
Next Steps
An implementation committee meeting will be held on September 12 in Nagpur, where OBC leaders will finalize strategy and announce the date of the Morcha.
