In just a few days, travel time on a major section of Amravati Road will be cut drastically, with commuters set to cover a 5-km stretch in nearly five minutes. The second phase of the flyover project — running from the RTO to Futala Square — will be inaugurated on September 12.
The new structure, officially named the Gyanyogi Dr. Shrikant Jichkar Flyover, spans 2.843 km, beginning near the petrol pump and ending at Futala Square. This comes after the first segment of the project, from Wadi Police Station to Gurudwara (1.95 km), was already opened to the public.
Authorities have permitted vehicles to ply at speeds up to 80 km per hour, though even at 60 km per hour both flyovers can be crossed in under five minutes.
The second phase had faced nearly a year’s delay, mainly due to pending approvals for tree felling and related hurdles. Despite this, construction was completed without any major accidents. A total of 766 segments were installed for the flyover, with adjustments made in two foundations to protect a tree near Bharatnagar.
Additionally, six massive girders — each measuring 65 metres in length and weighing 250 tonnes — were mounted at Law College Square using advanced Malaysian technology.
