Over 1880 Shiv Bhojan Thali scheme, launched during the COVID-19 pandemic to serve more than 1.70 lakh people, is facing closure, as the government has not paid the operators for the last six months. The Shiv Bhojan Thali was available for Rs 10 across the state, which was introduced by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.
The government is facing cash crunch resulting from the Rs 3,500 crore monthly payout under the ‘Ladki Bahin Yojana’. The government had agreed to pay a subsidy of Rs 25 per Thali (plate) in the rural and Rs 40 in urban area to 1881 operators.
Although the state government incurs a monthly expenditure of Rs 18.5 crore only, the operators have not been paid for the last six months. The operators are facing difficulties in running the centres. The operators are planning to stage demonstrations against the state government demanding release of the pending bills and also to increase in the subsidy.
