In a move aimed at improving affordable long-distance travel, Indian Railways has announced the launch of the Amrit Bharat Weekly Express, connecting Erode in Tamil Nadu with Jogbani in Bihar. The train, numbered 16601/16602, will pass through Nagpur, covering the journey in about 24 hours, according to the official notification.
The Amrit Bharat service is designed as a faster alternative for budget-conscious passengers. It will operate as a non-air-conditioned sleeper train, covering more than 800 kilometers. The Erode–Jogbani service will depart from Erode every Thursday, while the return train from Jogbani will run each Sunday.
Built on a push-pull configuration similar to MEMU trains, the service will have engines on both ends, enabling higher speed. Lightweight interconnected coaches will further allow quicker movement compared to conventional long-distance mail or express trains.
The express will halt at several major stations including Salem, Katpadi, Vijayawada, Warangal, Nagpur, Itarsi, Prayagraj, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, Patliputra, Barauni, Katihar, Purnea, and Forbesganj, among others.
