Nagpur: A disturbing episode in Shanti Nagar, where armed miscreants rode triple-seat on two-wheelers and smashed several parked vehicles, has drawn sharp attention to the city’s worsening menace of reckless bikers. Though police managed to nab those involved, countless others continue to flout traffic norms late at night, often escaping checks as enforcement thins after dark.
Residents across localities such as Sadar, Gittikhadan and Central Avenue report frequent sightings of three youngsters riding together, weaving through traffic and overtaking without warning. Broken CCTV networks and the absence of traffic personnel at key junctions further embolden these violators. Many of the riders—largely college students—are notorious for abrupt lane changes and dangerous stunts. While the problem is more common among young men, women too have occasionally been spotted engaging in similar rash riding.
The police’s flagship road-safety programme, ‘Operation U Turn’, launched on July 10 under Commissioner of Police Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal and supervised by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani, has already reduced accidents and curtailed drunk driving within seven weeks. Yet citizens are now calling for the same rigorous action against triple-seat riding, which continues to trigger accidents across the city.
DCP (Traffic) Lohit Matani confirmed that enforcement is being tightened. “Curbing triple-seat riding has always been a priority. It endangers not only the offenders but other commuters as well. Challans have risen steadily—from 25,345 in 2023 to 31,516 in 2024—and we have already surpassed last August’s count this year,” he said.
With public pressure mounting, residents are urging authorities to expand ‘Operation U Turn’ to tackle the triple-seat menace before more lives are put at risk.
