Born into a family of doctors and educators, Saumya Sharma seemed destined to follow the same path. Her grandfather, parents, and brother all pursued careers in medicine, while her grandmother served as a principal. Many assumed she too would become a doctor. But life had other plans.
While completing her law degree, Sharma decided to appear for the UPSC examination in her final year—and cleared it on her very first attempt. This remarkable journey was shared by Amravati Municipal Commissioner Saumya Sharma (Chandak) during the Meet the Press programme held on Friday.
Originally from Delhi, Sharma is married to Archit Chandak, Superintendent of Police in Akola district. The two met during training in Hyderabad, where friendship grew into love and eventually marriage. The couple now has a son.
Reflecting on her path, Sharma credited her inspiration to her mother. A regular newspaper reader, she found her legal background immensely helpful in her UPSC preparation. Though she once applied for NEET with the intention of studying medicine, she never took the exam. After thoughtful discussions with her family, she committed herself to the UPSC journey on June 2, 2017. Just months later, on February 19, 2018, her results were declared—marking the beginning of her career in public service.
At only 22 years of age, Sharma entered the IAS. From 2019 to 2022, she served as SDGM in Delhi, managing key responsibilities during the COVID-19 crisis.
Later, she was allotted the Maharashtra cadre, where her career gained further momentum. In 2022, she began her first posting at Deglur in Nanded, followed by roles as CEO of Nagpur Zilla Parishad and CEO of the Nagpur Smart City Project.
Since June 17, 2025, she has been serving as Municipal Commissioner of Amravati. “Whatever is good becomes my ideal,” she shared during the interaction.
Driving Civic Transformation
Commissioner Sharma has pledged to make sanitation a top priority for Amravati city. Her agenda focuses on solid waste management, development of public gardens, boosting municipal revenue, rejuvenation of Chhatri Lake, upgrading municipal schools, creating hawkers’ zones, and improving parking systems through pay-and-park models. She also emphasized manpower management and other critical civic concerns.
With her determination and vision, Sharma stands as an example of leadership that blends professional discipline with a personal commitment to public welfare.
