The newly inaugurated Dr. Shrikant Jichkar Flyover on Amravati Road was shut down within just 24 hours of its opening due to traffic chaos and accidents caused by construction debris.
The flyover was inaugurated on Friday by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. However, by Saturday morning, vehicular movement came to a standstill as barricades and leftover inauguration material on the stage spilled onto the road, creating blockages.
Traffic police confirmed that minor accidents occurred, though there were no serious injuries or fatalities. The situation led to confusion among motorists and resentment among citizens. Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Police Lohit Matani clarified that the closure order did not come from the police, but the flyover had to be blocked temporarily due to safety concerns.
National Highway Authority official Naresh Borkar stated that the process of clearing the inauguration material began immediately after the event. However, continuous rainfall hampered the work. By Saturday night, around 2.5 km of debris and barricades were expected to be completely removed, restoring smooth traffic flow.
