Mahavitaran is running a special campaign during the ‘Seva Parv’—the period from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday on September 17 to Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary on October 2—to implement the Pradhanmantri Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme. This scheme provides free electricity to consumers who use up to 300 units per month. Mahavitaran’s Chairman and Managing Director, Lokesh Chandra, has urged consumers to take maximum advantage of the scheme.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has instructed all departments to successfully implement the initiatives of ‘Seva Parv.’ He has also prioritized this scheme, as it offers direct benefits to electricity consumers.
About the Scheme
The Pradhanmantri Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024. Its purpose is to provide free electricity to regular residential consumers and allow them to earn income by selling surplus electricity.
Under this scheme, the central government provides a direct subsidy to consumers for installing solar power projects on their rooftops. The subsidy amounts are as follows:
- ₹30,000 for a 1 kW capacity project
- ₹60,000 for a 2 kW capacity project
- ₹78,000 for a 3 kW capacity project
- Housing societies can also receive a subsidy of ₹18,000 per kW for projects up to 500 kW.
Benefits and State Progress
A 1 kW solar project can generate approximately 120 units of electricity per month, depending on the availability of sunlight. When a solar project generates more electricity than the consumer needs, the electricity bill becomes zero. Additionally, consumers can earn income by selling the surplus electricity to Mahavitaran.
In the state, 2,84,245 Mahavitaran consumers have benefited from the scheme, and the total capacity of their installed solar projects has reached *1087.36 MW. **Nagpur district is at the forefront, with *43,910 consumers installing solar panels and achieving a power generation capacity of *171.83 MW. Similarly, in Wardha district, *8,559 consumers have installed solar panels on their rooftops, reaching a total generation capacity of 30.36 MW.
How to Apply
To avail of the scheme, consumers can register online from home on the website https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in. They can choose their preferred supplier.
