NMC’s ‘Healthy Streets’ Policy Moves Ahead with Public Voices
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), with technical backing from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), is pushing forward an ambitious ‘Healthy Streets’ policy aimed at transforming city roads into safer, greener, and inclusive spaces. In just two weeks, over 1,300 citizens have already shared their views online and offline—a clear sign that Nagpurians are ready for change.
The draft policy focuses on wider and safer footpaths, dedicated cycling infrastructure, redesigned junctions, and public transport–friendly roads. A citywide survey, open till September 25, is capturing people’s concerns—ranging from traffic congestion and lack of pedestrian safety to poor cycling options.
Why is this critical? Over the last decade, private vehicles in Nagpur have exploded in number, leading to worsening congestion, pollution, and unsafe streets. An ITDP study—Nagpur Urban Street Impact Assessment—found that vehicle speeds on major corridors regularly exceed 50 km/h, posing serious risks for pedestrians, cyclists, children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.
The Healthy Streets program is not just a policy—it’s a long-term movement to reclaim Nagpur’s streets. By adopting global best practices, NMC aims to draft a roadmap for sustainable mobility and safer public spaces.
With citizens actively voicing their needs, the message is clear: Nagpur no longer wants car-centric chaos—it wants people-first streets. The challenge now lies with NMC—will it truly walk the talk and deliver the transformation the city deserves?
