Nagpur’s lawless private bus operations are set for a long-overdue shake-up. After years of watching luxury coaches stop anywhere inside the Inner Ring Road — choking junctions, blocking traffic, and endangering lives — the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has finally stepped in.
NMC has taken possession of a prime MAIDC plot at Khapri, right next to the New Airport metro station, and cleared it to build a full-fledged private bus hub. This will include pick-up, drop, and parking facilities for nearly 100 buses, complete with compacted ground and water bound macadam (WBM) surfacing to handle even heavy multi-axle vehicles. Dedicated entry and exit bays will be carved out to prevent the chaos that currently plagues city roads.
The timing is no coincidence. Just last month, the Nagpur traffic police banned roadside pick-up, drop, and parking by private buses inside the Inner Ring Road between 8 am and 10 pm. The crackdown followed endless complaints of buses turning arterial roads into deathtraps. But enforcement has been patchy, and bus operators have pushed back in court, arguing there was no designated terminal. The Khapri hub is NMC’s answer — finally offering a structured alternative.
Slots will be allotted to operators on a rental basis, with NMC considering auction or lottery to ensure fairness. This not only promises order for commuters but also creates a new revenue stream for the cash-strapped civic body.
If delivered on schedule, the Khapri hub could end the dangerous midnight halts and reckless roadside boarding that have defined Nagpur’s private bus menace — and expose exactly why it took so long for authorities to act.
