I’m Chandrapur: Panic spread across parts of Chandrapur on Wednesday evening after a chlorine gas leak from the Municipal Corporation’s water purification plant left several residents struggling with breathing difficulties. The incident triggered chaos in the Rahmatnagar area, forcing dozens of families to evacuate their homes.
As the gas spread, locals complained of burning eyes, nausea, vomiting, and uneasiness. Many were seen covering their faces with cloths and masks to reduce exposure. Women and children were among those affected, with several people requiring hospital admission.
Officials from the district administration, municipal corporation, and fire brigade rushed to the site soon after the leak was reported. Senior police officials, including the Superintendent of Police, also arrived with teams to assist in crowd control and evacuation.
Residents revealed that they had noticed a foul smell since Tuesday night, but matters worsened around 7 pm on Wednesday when a major leak occurred. Strong winds carried the gas across the neighborhood, forcing hundreds to flee. Authorities confirmed that 60–70 families were shifted to safer locations, including Kidwai School and other civic-run facilities.
By 8 pm, a technical team began repair work at the plant. The affected area was cordoned off, and police evacuated nearby houses to ensure safety.
In an official statement, the District Disaster Management Authority confirmed the chlorine leak but clarified that no casualties had been reported. “The situation is under control,” the release stated, adding that monitoring will continue until the risk is fully eliminated.
