In an attempt to streamline city traffic, the Traffic Police has issued a new notification banning private buses from entering city limits for six months. This order has now been challenged in the Bombay High Court (Nagpur Bench) by private bus operators.
The petitioners argued that the notification is arbitrary, unreasonable, and contrary to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. They also pointed out that such restrictions violate their fundamental rights to operate. The High Court has accepted the amended petition, admitted the matter, and sought a reply from the Traffic Police Department.
The petitioners highlighted that instead of imposing a blanket ban, the authorities should have developed designated bus terminals outside the city to manage operations effectively. They stressed that thousands of passengers depend on private buses daily, and such sudden restrictions cause immense hardship.
On Wednesday, the High Court heard the petition and noted that the Traffic Police notification issued on September 12 prevents private buses from entering city limits. The Court has scheduled the next hearing for September 20 and directed the authorities to respond.
