Nagpur: Medical services in the city are set to be disrupted on Thursday, September 18, as doctors from both government and private hospitals will join a token strike. Resident doctors from Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC), along with members of the Central Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (Central MARD) and the Indian Medical Association (IMA), have announced their participation.
The protest is directed against the Maharashtra Government and the Maharashtra Medical Council’s (MMC) decision permitting homeopathy practitioners to prescribe allopathic medicines after completing a one-year Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP).
According to IMA, all private hospitals in Nagpur will shut down for 24 hours starting 8 am on Thursday until 8 am on Friday, September 19. Outpatient departments and emergency facilities at these hospitals will also remain closed during this period.
MARD, however, clarified that while emergency services at GMCH and IGGMC will continue, routine OPD and elective treatments at these institutions will be suspended for the day.
Addressing a press conference, IMA Nagpur president Dr. Rajesh Sawarbandhe warned that if the government does not reconsider its decision, doctors from across Maharashtra will stage a large-scale protest in Mumbai.
