NAGPUR: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) stepped up its drive against unsafe school transport on Thursday, inspecting 38 buses and vans across the city and penalizing 12 for violations ranging from expired fitness certificates to missing documents. The enforcement teams collected fines amounting to ₹2.89 lakh during the operation.
The crackdown comes in the wake of last week’s fatal crash near the Mankapur flyover, where a collision between a school bus and a van claimed the lives of a 24-year-old van driver and a 14-year-old student. The tragedy sparked widespread concern among parents and the public about the safety of school transport, prompting the RTO to intensify its checks.
Special Squads Deployed
Three joint teams from Nagpur City and Nagpur East RTO offices carried out Thursday’s inspections. The squads were led by City RTO Kiran Bidkar, Deputy RTOs Manoj Otari and Avinash Raut, with Motor Vehicle Inspector Archana Ghanegaonkar and Assistant Inspectors Akash Walde, Viplas Tiwari, and Nitin Doifode also part of the enforcement team.
Strict Action Ahead
Speaking on the drive, RTO chief Kiran Bidkar said the campaign will continue in the coming days.
“Flying squads are conducting on-road checks of school buses and vans. Notices are also being sent by speed post to operators whose fitness certificates have expired,” he said.
The RTO has assured that surprise checks will remain in force until operators comply fully with safety regulations, as authorities aim to prevent further tragedies involving school transport in the city.
