India’s passport system has now become more modern, secure, and efficient. From April 1, 2024, the Ministry of External Affairs launched Passport Seva Programme 2.0, and under this, the country’s first e-passport was issued in Nagpur.
The e-passport is equipped with a microchip that stores all essential details, enabling faster immigration clearance and preventing the use of fake passports. Immigration officers can instantly verify information by scanning the chip, reducing the chances of fraud and long queues at airports.
According to officials, the system ensures international-standard safety for Indian travelers. The government claims that the chip, compliant with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) norms, cannot be tampered with and secures sensitive personal information.
How to Apply
Citizens can apply for e-passports in the same way as regular passports through the Passport Seva portal. Along with the application form, biometrics and other documents must be submitted. Once verified, the applicant will receive an e-passport instead of the older version.
What is an E-Passport?
An e-passport looks like an ordinary passport but contains an embedded electronic chip. This chip securely stores personal details such as the holder’s name, date of birth, nationality, fingerprints, and photograph. This ensures stronger protection against duplication and forgery.
Security and Benefits
Instant verification at airports through chip scanning.
Fake passports can be detected immediately.
Faster immigration process with shorter waiting times.
Meets ICAO international standards, making it valid worldwide.
Availability
The first e-passport was issued in Nagpur, and the service is gradually being rolled out to major cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Surat, Bengaluru, Pune, and Chennai.
Regional Passport Officer (Nagpur), Bhishan Gurkha, confirmed that the introduction of e-passports will significantly strengthen India’s travel security and speed up immigration procedures.
