A tragic accident claimed the life of a 20-year-old labourer at a construction site in Vayu Sena Nagar on Sunday evening when he was struck by a reversing water tanker.
The victim, identified as Debnath Samir Das, a native of Odisha, was reportedly sitting near a water tank around 6:30 pm, wearing headphones and speaking to someone on the phone. Police suspect that the headphones may have prevented him from hearing the approaching vehicle.
According to authorities, the tanker driver, Satyam Kumar (30), allegedly reversed the vehicle carelessly, hitting Debnath and causing severe head injuries. He was immediately taken to Mayo Hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Construction work for the PDICC project is currently underway in the area, employing labourers from various states. Police have registered a case of negligence causing death against the driver and are investigating the incident further.
