The word Google is a quirky spin on Googol—a mathematical term for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros, coined by Milton Sirotta, the nephew of mathematician Edward Kasner. Interestingly, Google wasn’t always Google. Back in their Stanford PhD days, Brin and Page built a search engine called BackRub. As they brainstormed new names in 1997, they considered Googolplex but settled on the shorter Googol. During the process, fellow student Sean Anderson accidentally typed Google while checking domain availability. The typo turned into history when Page quickly registered google.com.

The company was officially incorporated in 1998, with September 27 later chosen as its anniversary date.
