Nagpur: A porcupine caused a morning spectacle on Friday when it was spotted running along the elevated Nagpur Metro line between Congress Nagar and Ajni stations, prompting a high-stakes rescue that lasted nearly an hour.
Metro control officials immediately contacted the Forest Department’s Transit Treatment Centre. Responding swiftly, forest guard Sudhakar Marskolhe arrived with Bandu Mankar, Chetan Barskar and driver Swapnil Bhure, while Metro employee Dilesh Meshram and his team joined the operation.
Rescuers repeatedly halted Metro services and boarded trains to chase the animal along the rain-soaked track. Thick moss around the elevated stretch made footing treacherous. During the pursuit, Metro staffer Dilesh Meshram slipped, suffering injuries to his hand, leg and back, and damaging his mobile phone. He was taken to hospital for treatment and is reported to be stable.
Despite the porcupine’s sharp quills and the slick surface, the combined team finally captured the animal safely. A veterinary check confirmed it was unhurt though fatigued from the chase. After a brief recovery, it will be released into its natural forest habitat.
Forest officials said they are investigating how the porcupine reached the elevated rail line, noting that the incident highlights the unexpected wildlife challenges faced during urban transport operations.
