The reckless digging of city roads has once again left Nagpurians fuming. The ₹197-crore Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (IITMS) project, handed to Keltron, has turned dozens of smooth roads into accident-prone stretches. The company has been busy laying underground cables for smart traffic signals, but in its wake, it has left broken pavements, scattered blocks, and half-dug roads — with no sign of proper restoration.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) recently slapped a ₹8 lakh fine on the firm for substandard work at 8–10 junctions. Yet, Keltron continues its arrogant disregard for public safety, ignoring penalties and leaving roads in a dangerous condition. Citizens allege that NMC’s lax attitude has emboldened the contractor, allowing it to do as it pleases without fear of action.
At Police Line Takli T-Point, blocks were ripped apart carelessly and left lying around. A two-wheeler skidded on the rubble just days ago — a disaster waiting to happen. At Dharampeth School T-Point, dug-up stretches have been abandoned for weeks. The story repeats at Nelson Square, where pavements were destroyed and never repaired, making the road resemble a quarry more than a city junction.
The damage is not cosmetic — it is a direct threat to motorists and pedestrians. Loose blocks, uneven surfaces, and rubble-strewn roads are forcing riders into dangerous swerves. For two-wheeler riders, these stretches have become a daily gamble with injury.
While NMC officials boast of SOPs for road restoration, the ground reality tells another story: chaos, neglect, and zero accountability. Until strict monitoring and immediate repairs are enforced, Nagpur’s “smart city” dream will remain a nightmare for its commuters.
