To promote more stable and understanding marital relationships, the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission has launched pre-marriage counselling centres on a pilot basis at ten locations across the state, Commission Chairperson Rupali Chakankar announced.
Chakankar made the announcement during a press conference at the Planning Bhavan in Nagpur, held alongside the Commission’s hearings. District Collector Dr. Vipin Itankar, Zilla Parishad CEO Vinayak Mahamuni, and Superintendent of Police Harsh Poddar were also present.
“Through pre-marriage counselling, young men and women will be guided on the emotional, psychological, and social aspects of married life.
These centres are expected to prevent many post-marriage disputes and reduce divorce rates,” Chakankar said.
The centres have been initially established in ten districts, including Pune, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Mumbai, and Nashik. Located within existing legal service centres, counselling sessions will be conducted by trained experts.
Chakankar also noted that, compared to other regions, the Nagpur division reports relatively fewer complaints to the Commission, thanks to the effective functioning of the Bharosa Cell and One-Stop Centres in the area.
