The Pune Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the formation of a Joint Committee to monitor the cleanliness and upkeep of Nagpur’s popular tourist destination — Futala Lake. The committee will include representatives from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Maharashtra Environmental Engineering Department, and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).
The NGT has instructed this committee to submit its inspection and cleanliness report by October 4. The tribunal emphasized that strict action would be taken if lapses were found.
Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh and expert member Dr. Vijay Kulkarni issued these directions. The next hearing on the matter will take place soon. The court has also directed the NMC to ensure that the Futala Lake area remains free of waste and pollution.
Earlier, the MPCB had submitted a report on July 10, 2025, highlighting the dumping of plastic and other waste materials in and around the lake. The report also mentioned a significant decline in water quality.
What Are the Supreme Court’s Orders?
The Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench and the Supreme Court had earlier given orders to maintain Futala Lake’s environment and prevent pollution. The NGT has now sought a compliance report based on these orders.
The tribunal’s latest move reinforces the need for strict monitoring and accountability to preserve the lake’s ecological and aesthetic value.
